Beyond the classroom: Celebrating HLP's Egyptian Adventure

September 7, 2026

At Horizons Charity, we believe that education extends far beyond the traditional classroom. True equity means ensuring that all young people, regardless of their background or circumstance, have access to life-changing experiences.

Thanks to our community of supporters, we were proud to help fund an unforgettable three-day trip to Sharm El Sheikh for eight Year 11 students from Haringey Learning Partnership (HLP) as a celebration after completing their GCSEs.

Opening Doors Through Equity of Access

For many young people, financial barriers can limit what feels possible. As Gerry Robinson, Executive Headteacher at HLP, noted, making this trip a reality involved everything from passport applications to securing visas, ensuring that not a single student had to pay a penny.

Educational equity is about more than access to qualifications; it is about access to experiences that broaden horizons and build a sense of place in the wider world.

By choosing Egypt, the trip offered students a chance to engage with one of the world's oldest civilisations while exploring history and culture that reflect the diverse heritage of their community.

Sun, Sea and Sensational Experiences

Led by trip leader Ms Dähn, the adventure was packed with "firsts." For one student, boarding a plane for the first time filled the 5.5-hour flight with wonder - and a welcome introduction to a trip completely free of Wi-Fi, replaced instead by shared snacks, rounds of Uno, and endless curiosity.

Once in Egypt, the students dove straight into action:

  • Conquering Fears: From riding camels and swimming a 300m stretch at the Blue Hole to scuba diving down to 12m deep, students pushed past their nerves. Witnessing students like Rhylee overcome hesitation to complete a 30-minute dive showed true resilience.
  • Adrenaline & Teamwork: The group sped across the desert on quad bikes through a stunning desert riverbed (Wadi) and played a spirited, sand-filled game of midnight beach volleyball under the stars.
  • Deep Camaraderie: Students who might not have chosen to spend time together at school bonded with maturity, kindness, and mutual support, cheering each other on through every new challenge.

I'm so glad I came, this trip make me feel alive.

The Power of Shared Memories

The trip was a masterclass in informal learning: navigating new cultures, building patience, and discovering a sense of wonder in the little things. It provided a powerful space for these young people to simply laugh, celebrate, and feel immensely proud of what they could achieve.

Projects like this exemplify why funding equity of access matters so deeply. They give young people the confidence to step outside their comfort zones and view their futures with optimism.
